Concrete contractor in the Castro

The Castro, historically Eureka Valley, filled in with Victorians and Edwardians in the decades around 1900, and the 1906 fire never reached it. The valley floor around Castro and 18th is flat; the streets climb steeply toward Corona Heights and Twin Peaks. Concrete work here splits the same way: old foundations below, walls and steep driveways above.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE · THE CASTRO

A valley with hills on three sides

Eureka Valley sits between Corona Heights, Twin Peaks, and the ridge toward Noe Valley. Where a house sits in it decides what its concrete has to do.

⌂ Fire-line survivors

The 1906 fire was stopped at Dolores Street, a few blocks east, so the Castro’s houses from the 1880s through the 1900s came through intact.

Surviving meant the original foundations stayed too: brick, or early concrete with little or no steel. Our foundation inspection is free and tells you what you have.

△ Grades above Market

West of Castro Street, the blocks climb fast toward Corona Heights and Twin Peaks. Lots there put the garage at the sidewalk and step the house up the hill behind it.

Walls, stairs, and drainage get planned together, because water from uphill lands on all three.

▦ Garages added later

Many older houses here had garages tucked under them decades after they were built, with new concrete tied into the old foundation a piece at a time.

How the garage was added changes the plan, so we look at it before quoting any foundation or slab work.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Castro concrete questions

How do I know what my Castro house is sitting on?
Look at the foundation from the basement or crawlspace. Brick, or concrete that crumbles at the surface and shows no steel at the cracks, points to an original foundation. We inspect at no charge and tell you whether it needs replacing now, later, or not at all.
Does every retaining wall on the hill need an engineer?
Not every one, but most. Walls over 4 feet need engineering and a permit, and so do shorter walls that support a driveway, a building, or a steep slope above them.
Can you work around businesses on Castro Street?
Yes. On commercial frontage we phase sidewalk work so every entrance stays reachable, and schedule pours around business hours where we can. The Public Works permit and inspection are part of the job.
