Concrete contractor in the Mission

The Mission is flat, sunny, and dense, and parts of it sit on ground that was creek and marsh before it was city. In 1906 the Valencia Street Hotel near 18th Street sank into that filled ground, and the fire that followed burned the northern Mission before it was stopped near 20th Street. Both still shape what’s under a Mission building.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE · THE MISSION

Two halves split by 1906

North of 20th Street, the Mission was rebuilt after the fire. South of it, older Victorians still stand. Under both, the ground changes block by block.

≈ The old lagoon

Early maps show a lagoon and marsh around 18th and Valencia, fed by creeks. It was filled as the city grew, and in 1906 the four-story Valencia Street Hotel sank into it when the fill liquefied.

Parts of the Mission fall in the state-mapped liquefaction zone. Check your parcel on SF Planning’s Property Information Map; if it’s in the zone, expect a geotechnical report.

⌂ North and south of 20th

The fire was stopped around 20th Street, so most buildings north of it date from the rebuild, and many south of it are older Victorians.

That line is a useful first guess at what a foundation is made of. The inspection settles it, and ours is free.

▦ Narrow lots, shared walls

Most lots are narrow, with buildings wall to wall and the only open space out back. Concrete, forms, and spoils often have to travel through the building or a side passage.

We plan access before quoting, so the price includes how the work actually gets in and out.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Mission concrete questions

Is my Mission building on filled ground?
Some are, especially near the old lagoon and creek beds. SF Planning’s Property Information Map shows whether your parcel is in the mapped liquefaction zone. If it is, foundation work will usually involve a geotechnical report, and we build to it.
Can you pour a backyard patio with no side access?
Usually. Small pours can be wheeled or pumped through a garage or hallway, with floors protected along the way. We work out the route at the site visit.
I got a sidewalk notice from Public Works. What now?
The fronting owner is responsible for the repair. We pull the permit, replace the squares to city standard, and schedule the inspection.
