Concrete contractor in the Marina
Much of the Marina is built on fill placed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and in 1989 the Loma Prieta earthquake showed what that ground can do: soil liquefied, buildings collapsed, and fires burned. Concrete work here starts with the soil, and on many lots it is part of a seismic retrofit.

SCOPE OF WORK · MARINA
Concrete work in the Marina
Foundations, retrofit footings, and flatwork on flat, filled ground near the bay.
Retrofit footings
Steel frames and new shear walls in soft-story garages need new concrete footings and grade beams. We pour them to the engineer’s design and coordinate with the retrofit crew.
Foundation service → GROUNDWATERGarage dig-downs
Lowering a Marina garage slab for an ADU puts excavation near shallow groundwater. Sub-slab drainage and waterproofing go into the design, not a change order.
Garage Slab Lowering service → FLAT LOTSDriveways that drain
On flat ground, water doesn’t run off by itself. Wide garage aprons get a deliberate pitch to the gutter, plus channel drains where the slope can’t do the work.

Built on fill, tested in 1989
The Marina is flat, close to the bay, and built on made ground. All three show up in how concrete work gets designed here.
≈ Exposition fill
Before 1915, much of today’s Marina was shallow cove and marsh. It was filled to create the grounds for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and the Palace of Fine Arts is the most visible thing left from it.
Most of the Marina falls within the state-mapped liquefaction zone. Foundation work typically follows a geotechnical report, and we pour what the engineer designs for that soil.
⌂ Soft stories
The 1920s and ’30s apartment buildings that define the Marina often devote most of the ground floor to garages. In 1989, that weak ground story is where several buildings failed.
San Francisco’s Mandatory Soft Story Retrofit Program targeted wood-frame buildings like these. Many retrofits add steel frames that need new concrete footings, which is work we do.
◎ Close to the bay
Groundwater sits closer to the surface here than in the hill neighborhoods, and salt air reaches exterior concrete near the water. Dig-downs need drainage and waterproofing designed in, and exterior slabs benefit from a good sealer and enough cover over the steel.
None of that is exotic. It just has to be in the plan from the start.
