Entry & hillside stairs

Full stair runs formed to consistent riser and tread dimensions, reinforced, and tied into landings and cheek walls. Long hillside runs get intermediate landings and drainage breaks.

REPAIR

Step repair & resurfacing

Broken nosings rebuilt, spalled treads resurfaced, settled bottom steps releveled. Repair when the structure is sound; honesty when the run has settled past saving.

Rails, grip & light

Handrail posts set in the pour (not drilled in later), broom or grit-seal tread texture for fog-wet mornings, and conduit sleeves for step lighting if you’re adding it.

Why SF stairs fail early

Water runs downhill, and in this city, downhill is usually a staircase.

The uneven-riser trap

Old SF stairs were often poured in additions and repairs over decades, leaving riser heights that vary step to step. Your feet memorize a rhythm; a 1-inch surprise breaks it. That’s how stairs put people in urgent care.

Code allows only minimal riser variation within a run — a rebuilt flight from us is metronome-consistent, top to bottom.

Every stair is a waterfall

On a hillside lot, the stair run is where roof, yard, and neighbor runoff all converge. Treads poured dead-flat pond and grow algae; treads pitched slightly forward shed water — but then the bottom of the run needs a drain, or your garage gets the waterfall.

We pitch treads, break long runs with drained landings, and give the water an exit.

Stair questions, answered straight

What do code-compliant stairs look like?
Residential code caps risers around 7¾ inches, requires treads around 10 inches deep, keeps riser variation within a run to a minimum, and requires graspable handrails on runs of four or more risers. Old SF stairs miss several of these at once — a rebuild fixes all of them in one pour.
Can you repair just the broken steps?
If the run’s structure and base are sound, yes — nosings, individual treads, and surface spalling are all repairable, and it’s much cheaper than a rebuild. If the run has settled or the base is washing out underneath, spot repairs are cosmetic and we’ll tell you so.
How long before we can use the stairs?
Light foot traffic in 24–48 hours; we stage access so you’re never locked out of your own front door for long. If the stairs are the only entry, we plan the pour sequence around it.
Why are my steps always slick in the morning?
Fog condensation on a smooth or glossy-sealed surface. The fix is texture: a broom finish or anti-slip grit in the sealer. We finish every exterior stair for wet grip by default.
